“Beauty is truth, truth beauty….that is all ye know on earth, and all ye need to know” John Keats, Ode on a Grecian Urn

The second artefact task we’ve been given is talking about beauty. It seems like a aesthetics issue. Everyone has their personal view about beauty. As for me, beauty is a self-consciousness feeling. It can not be talked about in a subjective position. If I like it, I think it’s beautiful, so it means beauty for me. But that’s my opinion, maybe you don’t like it and I won’t fight against you.

Until so far, I was confused that how I could make a representation of the thing on my personal sprit. Then I looked into the question which help us to start thinking on the list and a question got my attention.

Is it just about aesthetics (looks and sight)? Can beauty be heard or smelt or touched or tasted (and not seen)?

Suddenly, a idea appeared in my mind. What if I make the beauty representation in the senses instead of a mind imagination? For example, it can be called beauty when you see a beautiful painting; it can be called beauty when you hear a really amazing song. So that beauty comes visible and audible way.

Then I listed several different senses which can make people feel the exist of beauty.

  1. When you see a beautiful woman, it is the beauty you can see.

  2. When you touched by a painting in the gallery, it is the beauty you can see as well.

  3. When you hear a great song, it is the beauty you can hear.

  4. When you really tired and you can go to your comfortable bed finally, it is the beauty you can touch.

  5. When you eat a delicious food, it is the beauty you can taste.

  6. When you sit at your garden and smell the flower you planted a month ago, it is the beauty you can smell.

I chosen 1 to 4 to put in my artefact on the front list. As so far, I got the content, but what about the form? Should I shoot on the street?

My classmate Yichuan Huang I work with recommended me a stop motion film. It described how women do cosmetic surgery to herself and used stop motion to film it. Yes! It sounds really interesting and I never tried before. Huang and I decided to challenge this technique which is brand new to us.

The start for beginner is always difficult. Huang have more camera technology than mine. When we work together, we always have clear division of work. I charge the director and idea part and he responses for technology stuff. He figured out how many pictures we need and I began to draw the background we need.

If you watch carefully, you will find a series tricks I putted into the artefact. Such as the bedroom background I painted of the last scene imitate the famous painting < Van Gogh’s Bedroom in Arles >. I hope it will be interesting for audience.
